Dear
Friend: |
|
| |
|
The 2009 harvest is officially over.
Beginning on September 3, this year’s
harvest was smooth yet unpredictable, with some wild weather, as well
as several perfect days for growing
outstanding grapes. The summer growing
season was mild to warm with very few heat
spikes. This allowed the grapes to ripen
evenly, which is ideal. Once harvest began,
we had beautiful warm weather days and
things moved along quite smoothly. On
September 13 & 14, we had an unusual weekend
of rain which caused a few concerns.
Fortunately for us, the rain served to give
our vines a much needed drink of water.
|
|
Then, on October 13, wine country
experienced one of our wettest and
most severe rains for October in
recent memory. We received more
than 4 inches of rain in just a 12
hour period! Again, good fortune
was on our side. Almost all of our
grapes were harvested with the
exception of a few tons of Cabernet
Sauvignon. Some other grape growers
were not so lucky. Muddy, humid,
and warm conditions followed the
rains creating a perfect environment
for mold and grape rot. Then,
another round of unexpected rain
followed which created even more
headaches in the vineyard.
With the craziness of
this harvest season now behind us,
our winemaking team is excited about
the quality of this year’s fruit.
Most of our grapes avoided the
inclement weather and tasted
delicious coming into the
winery. We're confident that this
will be another outstanding vintage.
With the fermenting grape juice
comfortably resting, our crew is
preparing for winter rains and
getting the cellar cleaned up from
another busy harvest season.

Spiced Pumpkin Ginger Soup
Recipe |
 |
|
|
|
|
We could all use a little extra help
at the holidays, even just a new and
delicious yet easy recipe. I love
to begin my Thanksgiving feast with
a classic pumpkin soup. |
|
This tradition starts the meal with a warm and
welcoming dish that allows everyone
to slow down and remember what we
are here for - to join with friends
and family around the table, giving
thanks for all that we have. It
also gives me a chance to focus on
the other more complicated details
of the menu.
With this recipe, the leeks and
onions give a nice vegetable flavor,
while the spices add a classic aroma
and the chili powder gives a hint of
heat. This soup is best when you
puree it and then strain it through
a fine mesh sieve to remove any bits
of thyme or vegetable pieces. This
step really does make the soup silky
smooth.
Dry Creek Vineyard Chenin Blanc is the perfect wine to complement this
dish and a great way to begin your
Thanksgiving celebration.
